Clinician Meet, Career Advice For Clinicians With Tim Whistine

We are pleased to feature Tim Whistine, working with DirectShifts as a Behavioral Health Counselor and Social Worker with experience in healthcare under his belt. He is an expert in working with different types of staff members and patients, including those with chronic illnesses and mental health issues. We asked him to share some of his achievements, experiences, and challenges faced as a counselor with our readers. This will be a source of learning and excellent career advice to all new and aspiring counselors and healthcare professionals in 2022.

What do you love about working as a Behavioral Health Counselor?

I enjoy working in health care because of the opportunity to help others. I believe that holistic care is essential to improving outcomes and that health care has a responsibility to provide patient-centered care.

What career advice will you give to the new and aspiring clinicians in your field?

Tips for a successful counseling career by Tim:

  • Work diligently to improve your competencies, particularly in the one specific area where you are strongest.
  • Focus your practice on that one clinical skill or modality.
  • Target the population you are best suited to serve. It is true that a man who chases two rabbits catches neither.

What was the best part of being associated with DirectShifts?

For me, connecting with the kind and like-minded professionals at DirectShifts was a game changer! You are never alone in the process of providing the best possible care to your clients. Even through the onboarding process, you are surrounded by such helpful people. I highly recommend DirectShifts to clinicians seeking to build a successful practice.

Closing message to your readers

I once read that even a postage stamp reaches its destination by sticking it out. That is a great metaphor to remember when life or your profession feels challenging. Just stick it out! Stay the course! Hang in there! Better and happier times may be closer than you think. Success or failure begins with a certain mindset. Surround yourself with people that can help you develop the mindset you need.
